A New Chapter for Blyth Tall Ship: Welcoming Our New CEO

Blyth Tall Ship has always been about more than just sailing—it’s about transformation, opportunity, and community. As we embark on an exciting new chapter, we say farewell to our founder Clive Gray, whose vision and dedication over the last 15 years have shaped the charity into what it is today. At the same time, we extend a warm welcome to our new CEO, Siobhan Sargeant, who brings with her a wealth of experience and a passion for driving positive change.

The connection between Blyth and Antarctica is a fascinating one. The community initiative utilising its rich history of exploration to transform young lives raised in difficult circumstances is a truly inspiring endeavour. I am delighted and honoured to give it my enthusiastic support.

Sir Chris Bonington

Tall ships, adventure and active learning, all aimed at getting young people in to new jobs. This is an inspirational project for Northumberland and we should all back it.

The Duchess of Northumberland

This is an exceptional project. This story of the British first sighting of the Antarctic land mass deserves to be celebrated.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes

Antarctica was discovered by a boat from Blyth, Northumberland...

Blyth Tall Ship honours William Smith whilst serving the community of Blyth’s future.

Blyth Tall Ship began as a project to honour William Smith, a lesser-known Blyth hero, who discovered the Antarctic on a tall ship full of cargo. However, since its inception, Blyth Tall Ship has become a beacon of hope and education to those in search of training, meaningful experiences and friendship. Blyth Tall Ship reconnects the town of Blyth with its shipbuilding and seafaring heritage through education, heritage skills training, community engagement, and maritime experiences.

The Williams II, a boat similar to the vessel Captain Smith used, was restored by both the Blyth Tall Ship team and a number of students, studying for apprenticeships and NVQs, taught by our experienced team of educators. From this the charity developed.

Utilising the Williams II, we offer a number of sailing experiences, including day sails along the beautiful Northumbrian coast, and overnight stays aboard the ship taking in other areas of the uk.  You are able to experience the freedom of sailing the seas on a historic vessel, marvelling at the power of nature as the wind fills the sails and carries you to your next stop.

The Blyth Tall Ship charity is comprised of three main functions:

- Our heritage workshop
- Our archives
- Our Tall Ship The Williams II

We are lucky to have a great number of fantastic volunteers that support us across the charity, including the Blyth Tall Ship Sea Shanty Singers and the Gansey Knitters. We are always looking for passionate people who are interested in volunteering, whether you love woodwork, history or traditional sailing!

If you’re interested in joining our friendly group of volunteers please contact us for more information.
